Upcoming spacewalks involving ESA astronaut Alex Gerst have been postponed pending the launch of the Japanese HTV-7 resupply vehicle. The delay follows bad weather at the Tanegashima Space Center launch site in Japan, alongside investigation of the vehicle’s propulsion system. It is now re-scheduled for launch but follow the Japan’s space agency, JAXA, for latest news. Nominally the spacewalks will not now happen before the next Soyuz/crew rotation scheduled for launch Thursday October 11.
The spacewalks will continue upgrades to the orbiting laboratory’s power system. The equipment to be installed will be delivered on the Japanese vehicle.
EVA #52will install the adapter plates for the new batteries, completing the upgrades to two station power channels.
EVA #53 will complete the power system refurbishment on the port truss.
Both spacewalks are expected to last about six-and-a-half hours. These spacewalks will be the 213th and 214th in support of station assembly, maintenance and upgrades; and the eighth and ninth outside the station this year.
