Expectations for the future are often linked to past events. This is particularly true for ESA in 2006 as it reflects on perhaps the most extraordinary 12 months in its 30-year history. In 2005, ESA landed on Titan, sent a probe to Venus and discovered ice on Mars. Ariane 5 was back in business with five launches, an ESA astronaut visited the ISS in April, and Europeís first navigation system satellite went into orbit as the year came to a close.
