GIOVE-B leaves ESTEC en-route to Baikonur

GIOVE-B, the second Galileo in-orbit validation satellite, has departed from ESTEC, ESA's European Research and Technology Centre in The Netherlands, on the first leg of its journey to the launch site at Baikonur, in Kazakhstan.

The spacecraft travelled by road to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, from where it was flown to Moscow in an Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft. After customs formalities are completed, GIOVE-B will fly on to Baikonur, with arrival scheduled for 13 March.

After being developed and manufactured by an industrial consortium led by Astrium GmbH, GIOVE-B successfully completed a final campaign of tests in the Test Centre at ESTEC.
 
The launch of GIOVE-B is scheduled for 04:16:02 local time on 27 April (00:16 CEST, 22:16 UTC [26 April]).
