The first Ariadna Call for Proposals in 2009 is closed.

11 July 2009 This Ariadna Call for Proposals for 2009, closed on 11 July, encompasses some fascinating research ideas on the themes of general relativity, artificial intelligence and biomimetics.
The Advanced Concepts Team has started to work on three different studies in cooperation with different European academic institutes:
  • Mapping the Spacetime Metric with a Global Navigation Satellite System (with the University of Ljubljana)
The natural evolution of GNSS is to become more and more accurate and autonomous, with the help of very stable clocks and cross links capabilities. If relativistic coordinates are used to account for General Relativity effects, the metric acting on the satellite constellation can be inferred solving an inverse problem. The aim of this study is to develop such an algorithm, test it against simulated data, and characterize the influence of the clock noise on the inferred metric.

  • Evolution in robotic islands: Enhancing the potential of automatic design techniques through a parallel distributed environment (with the University of Plymouth - School of Computing and Mathematics)
The main objective of this study is to perform the optimisation of a neuro-controller in an island model, with a vision to demonstrate empirically an improvement of the automatic design methodology.

  • Path Planning Strategies Inspired By Swarm Behaviour of Plant Root Apexes (with the New University of Lisbon - FFCT)
The aim is to study soil exploration of plant roots with the purpose of transferring their optimisation strategies to engineering applications.

Ariadna Calls for Proposals

The Calls for Proposals consist of announcements of specific assessment studies, in which the topic of research and tasks to be performed have been previously defined by ESA's Advanced Concepts Team and have been identified to have potential in terms of ESA's objectives.

Ariadna Calls for Ideas

In the frame of the Ariadna scheme, while Calls for Proposals invite interested parties to submit study proposals on very specific topics and complying with a set of well defined tasks, Calls for Ideas invite research groups to submit ideas for their own proposals relating to a theme or problem, specified by the ACT and identified as having a potential in terms of ESA's objective
