The Plant Kingdom and Biomimetics

The Plant Kingdom represents an amazing source of inspiration for designing and developing new smart solutions. Velcro and the lotus effect are only two examples of successful designs.

Climbing plants and tactile-based grasping devices

Climbing plants are capable to grasp objects by extending themselves and then use the objects as support by coiling around them. The goal is to achieve maximum vertical height for rich sun exposure while avoiding the energy expenditure of developing a supporting trunk.

Plants and seed dispersal

In order to dispers their seeds throughout the environment, plants have evolved specific structures and strategies to take advantage of the free energy available. Therefore seeds exhibit many examples of efficient design and specialized functionality that may deserve a deeper study.

Life in Extreme Environments

Extreme environments include terrestrial, marine  polar or deep subsurface regions distributed across the globe, and in term of volume, they represent the most important part of earth biosphere. They are defined as having one or more parameters permanently close to the limits known for life in its various forms.
