Student Competition for the 1st IAA Planetary Defense Conference
06 November 2008 The student competition of the 1st IAA Planetary Defence Conference, is now including also an ESA call for student papers supporting the best european students.

•Planetry Defence Conference 'Encounter 2029: Research Students Investigating Apophis'
Post-graduate student researchers are encouraged to submit abstracts on topics on a variety of subjects that can be related to the theme of Apophis and small body encounters. Subjects for papers might include, but are not limited to; modelling of the small asteroid environment and related effects (e.g. plasma environment, dust, solar radiation, Yarkovsky effect); geology and geophysics of small bodies, dynamics and control related to Apophis-like rendezvous and interception scenarios; innovative deflection strategies and mission architectures, etc...

•ESA Call for Student Papers
European students can obtain some financial support by submitting an abstract to the ESA Call for Student Papers. The submitted paper must be based on one of the suggested topics and thus ESA reserve the right to contribute and be co-authors on the final paper if significant collaboration should arise. Selected students will receive financial support from ESA, exclusively for the purposes of paying for the conference registration fee, travel and/or as subsistence allowance.

How do I participate ?
To participate in the PDC Encounter 2029 Research Student competition select the "Student Abstract" box on the online submission form.
To participate also in the ESA Call for Student Papers select the "Student Abstract" box and the "ESA Call for Papers" box on the online submission form.
If the abstract is selected via the official Planetary Defence Conference review panel then the students will be asked to prepare the full technical paper. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is 15 December 2008. Letters of official acceptance and instructions for paper submission will be mailed on January 15, 2009 at the latest.
