Advanced Energy Systems

ACT research in the field of energy systems is trying to address novel concepts and methods for space energy systems.

Sufficient power supply and efficient energy management are not the only main concerns of all space activities; space energy systems also have to operate in an environment that requires them to be inherently sustainable: there are no cheaply available hydrocarbons to burn in space; power systems are not allowed to produce any 'waste' and all losses, e.g. the heat losses of any energy conversion process, need to be minimised.

Research on advanced energy systems includes the supply component (solar power from space concepts - SPS, space nuclear power systems - NPS) as well as the storage and distribution aspects. In case of closer ties between the energy and space sector, the space component would be the only (small) system of a much larger system. We are therefore currently studying how e.g. space assets might best integrate into the management of future, complex energy grids with large components of renewable energy plants. For more detailed information on related activities you are invited to have a look at past and ongoing projects.
