Coupled mobility

The application of biomimetic locomotion to the Martian surface offers the possibility of increased robustness and failure tolerance. Robotic tumbleweed would imitate natural tumbleweed and would travel along the Martian surface driven by wind, by its internal motor, or rolling down slopes. Identification and development of innovative concepts of promising novel locomotion-techniques in planetary environments were a priority of this study. Several concepts were presented and evaluated.

This Ariadna-study was done in collaboration with the Automation Technology Laboratory at Helsinki University of Technology.
