Jai Grover

Jai was a Research Fellow in Fundamental Physics from June 2015 until May 2018. He joined the ACT again in October 2021 as a Scientific Coordinator.

He has a doctoral degree from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge, obtained in 2011 under the supervision of Jan Gutowski. He also has masters degrees in mathematics and physics from the universities of Cambridge and Toronto respectively.

Research

Jai's main research interests and background are in high energy and gravitational physics, with a focus on black holes. The emphasis on black holes is due to their centrality to the problem of quantum gravity, relevance to a number of different branches of physics, and potential to be observed - through gravitational wave emission or light emission from their visicinity. While at the ACT he worked with another research fellow, Alexander Wittig, to study features of the strong gravitational lensing of light on black hole spacetimes - in particular, the so-called shadow cast by a black hole against an illuminated background. A visualisation tool to understand this process better can be found on the ACT website here.

While at the ACT he also worked on various aspects of quantum information. This was motivated by the prospect of increasingly sensitive quantum tests of gravitational physics in space. This included studying optimal measurements - in the sense of quantum metrology - for the proposed MAQRO space based matter wave interferometry experiment. It also included a study to understand the effect of gravity on entangled photons. These projects were performed with former ACT graduate trainee Alexander Hickey and through Ariadna collaborations with researchers from the University of Warwick and Bern respectively. Jai has also worked on a project studying optical super-resolution in the setting of multi-parameter quantum metrology. This work was done with ACT graduate trainee Andrej Krzic and in collaboration with Palacky University.
