- Description
Satellites in geostationary orbit, 36 000 km up, remain in the same position in the sky relative to Earth's surface. Geostationary orbit is such an economically valuable region that it is carefully regulated by the International Telecommunication Union, with nations assigned geostationary slots along the 265 000 km-long circle corresponding to their geographical territory, with positioning carefully worked out to avoid interference from overlapping signals.
