After its launch on 27 September 2003, SMART-1 spiralled around the Earth for 14 months to reach the moon 'gateway' in mid November 2004. During this long trip SMART-1 tested for the first time in space a solar-electric propulsion engine on a distance comparable to that of an interplanetary travel.
