Background & Objectives

Since the launch of ERS-1 in 1991, ESA has hosted a number of successful Symposia and Workshops, including:

  • the ERS Scientific Symposia in Cannes (1992), Hamburg (1993) and Florence (1997)
  • the ERS Pilot Projects and Thematic Application Workshops in Toledo (1994), London (1995), Frascati (1995, 1996, 1999), Zurich (1996) and Liege (1999).

ESA continues to support the development of Earth Observation along the following main three lines:

- Science & Methodology
- Development of Applications / Public Services
- Development of the commercial market for EO-based Services

The fourth Scientific Symposium - jointly hosted by ESA and Chalmers University of Technology - is meant to cover both the ERS and Envisat missions.

The event will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, from
16 to 20 October 2000

The Symposium is open to all interested parties, from scientists to operational commercial users and service providers.
It will offer an opportunity to appraise the current status of ERS applications and to explore future applications of Envisat.

Participation

About 300 ERS AO projects are currently underway, whereas around 700 Envisat AO projects are ready to start.
Within the commercial distribution policy, a new scheme for both ERS and Envisat data has been set up.

Over 650 participants have already registered, among which over 400 verbal presentations, about 150 posters and several demonstrations have been accepted.

New registrations are accepted in Gothenburg directly.

Newly appointed ERS and Envisat Distributing Entities, Value Adding Companies and Service Providers will participate in the event, and bring their contribution in an active EO market.

About 25 Exhibitors are present in the Exhibition Area.
Language & Fee

  • The official language of the Symposium is English.
  • No participation fee will be charged.
Participants are expected to finance their own travel and accommodation expenses.
Programme

Scheduled sessions may still undergo some last minutes changes that will be modified in Gothenburg.

  • Posters are intended for display, in Hall "H" - first floor, throughout the Symposium duration and not only specifically during the relevant session of verbal presentations.

Presenters are allowed to start mounting their Posters on Monday 16th October from 07:00 to 14:00.
Dismounting is allowed on Friday 20 October from 12:00 to 18:00.

Please note that the accepted poster dimensions are:

Height:120 cm
Width: 80 cm

Poster presenters will find a poster panel index map with their own poster location for easier retrieval of the assigned position.
The index map can be found at the Reception and Registration Desk and at the beginning of poster panel rows in Hall "H".
Presenters are invited to mark their presence on the map.

Presenters are invited to ensure their presence at the poster in particular on Monday 16 October afternoon, at the end of the Plenary Session, at all coffee breaks throughout the week and especially on those days in which their application domains are treated.

  • Demonstrations are arranged in Hall "H" and Hall "J".
    Please click for details.
Demo presenters are invited to mount their demonstrations starting mid-morning 16 October through Monday afternoon around 16.00 in time for the inauguration of the exhibition/poster panels area (Hall "H") and demo area
(Hall "J")
foreseen between 17.00 and 18.15.

Hall "J" layout includes allocation of a roughly estimated physical space of 2m x 2.5m for each demo (PC, table, chairs, poster hanging wall behind, internet connection and any other H/W, S/W equipment resulting from agreement with ESA).

The same area hosts 5 e-mail connections for use by participants to the Symposium.

For demos hosted in Hall "H", see details by clicking on 'demonstrations' link.

The Final Programme will show the list of demonstrations including also the ESA ones.

Presenters are invited to be at their demo position in particular on Monday 16 October afternoon, at the end of the Plenary Session, at all coffee breaks throughout the week and especially on those days in which their application domains are treated.

As for exhibitors and poster presenters, demo presenters are invited to dismount their demos on Friday 20 October from 12.00 to 18.00.
