TERRE (s): Photo exhibitions of Earth seen from space by Thomas Pesquet
During his six-month stay on the International Space Station, ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet took thousands of photos of Earth from space. Now these photos being shown in exhibitions in France and internationally in association with ESA.
After having filled the social media feeds of millions of users daily during Thomas’s Proxima mission between November 2016 to June 2017, dozens of his stunning images can be discovered, or rediscovered, in a series photography show and art festivals this summer.
Speaking about his photos recently, Thomas said, “With access to the Cupola, our observation module on the Space Station, for almost 200 days and 200 nights, I had the chance to contemplate about our planet.
“The infinite spectacle of nature on the scale of the continents, 450 km below, under our trajectory: rugs of light on Europe at night when the clouds part or the hypnotising dance of the aurora borealis. Seas and deserts, forests, cities and mountains are unveiled in all their majesty.”
“I felt the need almost physically to protect our oasis of life, lost in the dark immensity of the cosmos: our Earth is ultimately only a spaceship launched into an endless journey around the Sun, with limited resources,” Thomas added.
All the photos taken by Thomas Pesquet can also be found on his Flickr account, and many of them now appear in the new book TERRE(s) from Michel Lafon, which is available in bookstores or can be ordered online.
