The socio-economic impact of space activities in ESA Member States has been evaluated for the following countries: the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the UK. This information has been aggregated from studies, surveys and data analysis.

In early 2015, encouraged by the discussion in the ESA Space Economy Steering Group Committee with Member States and within the OECD Space Forum, a pilot project was also launched. The objective was to work towards a harmonised and shared methodology for the data collection and socio-economic evaluation in the European space industry.

Member States and appointed national experts in economics and statistics, participated in the elaboration of a shared questionnaire to industry with the aim of measuring the socio-economic effects of space investments.

Member States participated by: providing inputs based on previous experience; supporting the plan for the continuation of the pilot in a further phase; or regularly providing input on the progress of the pilot and outputs.

Based on the goodwill of delegates and experts, as well as on the particularly appreciated input from Italy which shared the use of their existing platform, the pilot has enabled participating Member States to proceed with data collection in the first quarter of 2016. Results aggregated at the national level will be included mid-2016.
