How can digital cities foster urban innovation?

Cities are becoming ever more data driven, with information gleaned from space as an important component.

Deploying sensors for city-wide data acquisition will be crucial for cities of the future. Space-enabled internet-of-things technology enables ordinary objects to collect data and connect to other devices to make everyday tasks easier and more efficient.

Both local governments and businesses can use such data to deliver smart city solutions, reducing climate change using efficient energy systems and delivering greener waste management.

Representatives from the cities of Darmstadt, Glasgow and Tallinn are due to discuss how to create interconnected smart cities.

“Digital cities” will take place at 17:00 CET on 12 November and will be screened live on ESA Web TV.

After the city representatives have outlined their work, there will be an open discussion with questions to the three speakers.
