For ESA, committing and acting towards SD is a matter of basic coherence, considering its space-related missions delivering applications and services that serve both citizens and the planet.

This coherence is especially tangible in the light of international efforts and discussions on sustainability, notable the Conferences of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change where ESA has an observer status since 2002. COP21 will take place from 30 November to 11 December 2015 in Paris. SD corporate activity has been and will be involved in various preparatory events.

Sustainable Development (SD) at ESA corresponds to a holistic  and strategic approach covering not only the contribution of space activities to a more sustainable society and planet but also a mean to reflect on a space Agency’s responsibilities in that field and act accordingly.

ESA reports on sustainability are based on international standards in this field (Global Reporting Initiative (especially for the environmental part) and ISO 26000, and aim at sharing practices, challenges and opportunities with the external world. Nowadays, making extra-financial data available to the public is a fundamental element of organisation management. It represents an essential ethical behaviour, corresponding to corporate social responsibility values.
