Technology transfer is the process of using technology, expertise, know-how or facilities for a purpose for which they were not originally intended, i.e. a technology developed for one sector is used in a totally different area.

The transfer process consists of extracting and marketing space technologies, services and applications by analysing the needs of non-space applications and identifying suitable space technologies to meet these needs.

ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office (TTPO) provides a number of opportunities to entrepreneurs, start-ups, smaller companies and European businesses to take advantage of the wealth of available technologies, expertise, patents, systems and services from ESA's space programmes.

TTPO is located at the European Space Research and Technology Centre - ESTEC - in Noordwijk in the Netherlands, the largest ESA establishment, a test centre and hub for European space activities, responsible for the technical preparation and management of ESA space projects and providing technical support to ESA’s satellite, space exploration and human spaceflight activities.

Support for the technology transfer is provided in a number of different ways:

  • by the Technology Transfer Network (TTN) and its technology broker companies throughout Europe
  • collaborating with national technology transfer initiatives in ESA Member States
  • through a number of TTP business opportunities through open calls for proposals, more here
  • via TTPO's business incubation centres, more here
  • through a number of Space Solutions initiatives and specific events, more here
  • and by making a number of ESA's intellectual properties (patents) available for commercialisation, more here
