Three teams of university students were selected to develop and perform their hypergravity experiments during ESA's Spin your Thesis! 2012 campaign.

Gliding arc under varying hypergravity: plasma diagnostics and deposition of carbon nanostructures

GRAVARC TNG team
GRAVARC TNG team

The GRAVARC TNG team is composed of three PhD students from Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. The experiment examined the behaviour of gliding arcs of plasma in noble gases under hypergravity conditions with the objective of improving our understanding of the physical phenomena involved.

Analysis of a closed loop pulsating heat pipe under different gravity levels

Hy-PHP team
Hy-PHP team

The HY-PHP team is composed of one PhD student and one Master student from the University of Bergamo (Italy). They investigated the thermal and fluid dynamic performances of a closed loop pulsating heat pipe operating under hypergravity conditions.

Combination of hypergravity and nanotechnology for the improvement of the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts

Osteo team
Osteo team

The Osteo team is composed of two PhD students from the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and one Master’s student from the University of Pisa. They have presented an experiment about the combination of hypergravity stimulation and barium titanate nanoparticles (BTNPs) on the proliferation and the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and whether hypergravity could improve the nanoparticle internalisation in a cellular system.

Study of Leidenfrost droplet under hypergravity

Spin-Leidenfrost student team
Spin-Leidenfrost student team

The Spin-Leidenfrost team is composed of two PhD students from the University of Liège Belgium. They have investigated the effects of hypergravity on Leidenfrost drops.
