In brief

The European Space Agency’s Education Office (ESA Education) and ELGRA (European Low Gravity Research Association) are pleased to announce the ESA/ELGRA student sponsorship competition for students presenting  at the 2022 ELGRA Symposium that will take place in Lisbon, Portugal from September 6th to 9th 2022. Encouraging students to present their research and providing mechanisms to fund this has become an essential feature of the ELGRA Symposia and at the heart of ESA Education. This is aligned to one the association’s principles of promoting student participation and integration within the field of microgravity research. More information about the symposium can be found here.

In-depth

All abstracts submitted to the ELGRA Symposium by students will be reviewed by the selection committee. Students whose abstracts have been accepted will be informed that they qualify for the sponsorship. Presenters will also be informed if they have been selected for a poster or oral presentation format and will be entered in a “Best Student Poster” and “Best Student Oral Presentation” competition.

Student sponsorship:

Sponsorships are available for up to 10 students, who have abstracts accepted to the symposium. This opportunity is under a joint sponsorship between ESA Education Office and ELGRA.

Successful solicitation for the sponsorship shall be done on a competitive basis and judged by the quality of the abstracts, CVs and motivation letters. Recipients of the ESA/ELGRA sponsorships will be expected to give an oral or poster presentation during the symposia.

The sponsorship will be granted to the presenting author, covering up to 1000 EUR to support the symposium registration fee, travel and accommodation expenses.

Students must meet the eligibility criteria of this programme for the ESA/ELGRA sponsorship (see below the paragraph headed “Student Sponsorship Guidelines”).

How to apply for the scholarship?

The selection committee will contact all students whose abstracts have been accepted, informing them of the sponsorship opportunity. Students interested in applying for the sponsorship should submit:-

-A duplicate copy of the abstract that has been accepted by the ELGRA symposium through the official call for abstracts on the Symposium website.

-A letter on your motives for applying

You will be asked in the registration process if you are a student – this will determine validity for entry to the competitions.

Each poster/oral presentation will be evaluated by a committee formed by experts from ELGRA as well as one representative of ESA Education Office. A Distinction Award will also be given to the best student poster and oral presentation in each discipline (Life Sciences and Physical Sciences) and be given to the winners during the gala dinner. The awardees will receive a diploma, a prize, and an honorary ELGRA membership to the presenting author.
