N° 12–2018: Call for media: 20th anniversary of the Baveno Manifesto, 20-21 June 2018

Media representatives are invited to attend the event, which is being held in Baveno, Italy, and also visit the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.

The event will highlight the achievements of the European Copernicus programme since the initial commitment of intents in 1998 and examine how the programme has evolved into an independent European Earth Observation system that delivers services for the environment and for security.

Today, Copernicus has seven satellites in operation, offers six services and serves more than 150 000 registered users. It has proven to be an essential contribution for the implementation of European Union policies.

This high-level conference will feature contributions on growth and benefits to citizens, as well as discussions on plans for the future evolution of Copernicus. The conference will be held few days after the approval of the new Regulation that sets the action for the next financial period.

The official start of operation of the new data access platforms (DIAS) will be included in the event.

Johann-Dietrich Woerner, ESA Director General; Elżbieta Bieńkowska, EU Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs; Tibor Navracsics, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport and responsible for the JRC, as well as many important guests will attend the conference to present their activities.

Representatives of media will also have the opportunity to visit the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Ispra. During the visit, journalists will be able to enter the European Microwave Signature Laboratory as well as the European Crisis Management Laboratory for information and presentations on Copernicus related activities.

Press trip interviews can be organised with experts from ESA and the European Commission.
