On 22 October 2001, Proba-1, the first satellite in the PRoject for OnBoard Autonomy series, was launched on a two-year mission as a technology demonstrator. Once in orbit, however, the small satellite’s unique capabilities and performance made it evident that it could make important contributions to science, and so its original lifetime was extended for it to serve as an Earth observation mission.
