Air Pollution of the Kathmandu Valley Case Study Worksheet excercise 1. This excercise does not require the use of LEOWorks.
 
Having read the background information included in this case study, which do you think is the most harmful form of air pollution?
We went around Kathmandu and took some photographs which we would like to show you.

Download 10 pictures (Fig 7.1 to Fig 7.10 on right) of visible sources of air pollution and save them.
To display the photographs, you may use LEOWorks or any other display tool. If you want to use LEOWorks, the tutorial will instruct you on how to load and display the photographs using the Animation Tool.

1. What is air pollution, and what are its main pollutants?

2. How has the topography of the Kathmandu valley contributed to air pollution?

3. Open the pictures one by one using the display tool you have on your computer.

4. What are the visible sources of the air pollution? Can you relate observed visible pollution to the existence of very fine pollution like PM10?

5. Explain what PM10 is. Explain why it is important to measure this type of pollution.

6. Find a practical way to judge the degree of air pollution along a busy street, using eyes, ears and nose. Do not forget the time component (calm hours vs. rush hours, weather conditions, etc..). Organise a test run with your procedure.
