On 20 July, members of the media are invited to a briefing on space weather activities being undertaken as part of ESA's new Space Situational Awareness Preparatory Programme. The briefing will be held at the 38th Assembly of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), the world's biggest interdisciplinary conference on space science.

The media briefing is being held in coordination with a series of four half-day sessions at COSPAR focusing on space weather, co-organised by ESA and the Royal Observatory of Belgium.

Under the Space Situational Awareness Preparatory Programme (SSA-PP), ESA is preparing to build a capability to watch for hazards in space stemming from possible collisions between objects in orbit, harmful space weather and potential strikes by natural objects that cross Earth's orbit.

In Europe's economy today, numerous sectors are potentially affected by space weather, ranging from space-based telecommunications, broadcasting, weather services and navigation through to power distribution and terrestrial communications, especially at northern latitudes.

SSA space weather (SWE) activities are focusing on services for owners/operators of satellites in space and infrastructure on the ground. SSA's SWE services will enable end-users in a wide range of affected sectors to mitigate the effects of space weather on their systems, reducing costs and improving reliability.

More information on SSA is available via http://www.esa.int/ssa
