Would you like to live on the Moon? Between 1969 and 1972, 12 astronauts walked on the Moon, but we have never been able to live there. Sending people for extended stays on the Moon would help to boost our understanding of our neighbour in space, and provide a platform to explore the rest of the Solar System.

First, we need to build bases there with everything necessary to survive. What would this kind of a Moon base look like? ESA is challenging teams of students to design a shelter that could be home for at least two astronauts, in a project called Moon Camp!

What would you use to build a Moon base?

The students’ plans must use resources found on the Moon, such as lunar soil and ice; and think about the technology that would be needed, such as how to produce power, recycle water, grow food, and protect people from meteorites and radiation. Students must also design a 3D model of their bases using software programs Tinkercad® or Fusion 360®!

Living on the Moon would be an exciting adventure, but it could be dangerous too!

The Moon Camp challenge has two varieties: one for students up to 12 years-old, and another for students between 13 and 18 years-old. Would you like to design a Moon base? What important things would you need to consider? Would you like to live there?

If you and your friends have some good ideas, maybe you could team up and take part in Moon Camp! You will need to gain new skills in science, technology, teamwork, and communication, just like real space experts! To find out more, including how to apply, visit http://www.esa.int/Education/Moon_Camp/

Entries are open until March 2019, with winners being announced in May – just before the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landings. There are some great prizes for the winning teams, including a 3D printer and a webinar with one of ESA's own astronauts.

Cool fact: Moon Camp projects will be judged by a jury with experts from ESA, Airbus Foundation, and Autodesk!
