ESA / About Us / ESOC

In 2008, the Association of Space Explorers (ASE) proposed a structure comprising different groups and networks to deal with the asteroid impact threat, and which could ultimately report to the UN Security Council. One of the groups in this structure is the MPOG, encompassing all space-faring nations, which can be mandated to outline the most likely options for NEO deflection missions. It would also handle the question of how countries can best cooperate in preparing an asteroid deflection mission.

About the Association of Space Explorers (ASE)

ASE is an international non-profit professional and educational organisation of over 350 individuals from 35 nations who have flown in space. Founded in 1985, ASE's mission is to provide a forum for professional dialogue among individuals who have flown in space, support space science and exploration for the benefit of all, promote education in science and engineering, foster greater environmental awareness, and encourage international cooperation in the human exploration of space.

About the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS)

UNCOPUOS was set up by the UN General Assembly in 1959 to review the scope of international cooperation in peaceful uses of outer space, to devise programmes in this field to be undertaken under UN auspices, to encourage continued research and the dissemination of information on outer space matters, and to study legal problems arising from the exploration of outer space. A UNCOPUOS scientific and technical subcommittee has the task to study the asteroid impact threat.

About ESA Space Situational Awareness Preparatory Programme (SSA-PP)

Under SSA-PP, Europe will know what goes on in space by acquiring the capability to watch independently for objects and natural phenomena that could harm satellites in orbit or facilities - such as power grids - on the ground.
