  • Photon-enhanced thermionic emission for space power systems
  • Microwave drilling
  • Charge mobility in nanostructured supercapacitors

The deadline to participate is: 14 July 2014.

Study descriptions

  • The Silky Way: Biomimetic sensing through changes in structural proteins(Study Description) Study Reference Number: 14-6401 Type of activity: Standard study (25 k€) Study objective: This project will investigate the feasibility of a new type of biosensor based on silk optical fibres to detect chemical and biological components, with an emphasis on label-free sensing.
  • Photon-enhanced thermionic emission for space power systems(Study Description) Study Reference Number: 14-2101 Type of activity: Standard study (25 k€) Study objective: This project will study the efficiency of photon-enhanced thermionic emission (PETE) and the feasibility for use in space applications.
  • Microwave drilling(Study Description) Study Reference Number: 14-9301 Type of activity: Standard study (25 k€) Study objective: This project will study the effectiveness of fracturing relevant soil materials (Mars/Moon) using microwave radiation and assess the power levels required.
  • Charge mobility in nanostructured supercapacitors(Study Description) Study Reference Number: 14-7001 Type of activity: Standard study (25 k€) Study objective: This project will investigate how nanostructured surfaces can allow supercapacitors to reach energy and power densities suitable for space applications.

How to apply

To apply follow these three steps:

  • Download this Ariadna Call for Proposal documents from the esastar web site (after clicking on the EMITS tab, expand the Open Invitations to Tender [left frame] and look for the Aridana entry.).
  • Write your proposal and address the scientific issues raised in the study decription.
  • Submit your proposal in electronic format via the esastar web site.

NOTE: You need an account in esastar system both to access the documents and to make the submission.

What is a call for proposal?

An Ariadna Calls for Proposals seeks the collaboaration of the European academia to address a number of scientific questions detailed in the study descriptions (available above). These are defined by ESA's Advanced Concepts Team and have been identified to have potential in terms of ESA's objectives. The objective of the Ariadna scheme is to perform collaborative high-level research on advanced topics of shared interest and usually slightly outside the usual ESA and space horizon together with university research groups.
