The Plant Kingdom and Biomimetics
The Plant Kingdom represents an amazing source of inspiration for designing and developing new smart solutions. Velcro and the lotus effect are only two examples of successful designs.Plants are far to be the passive entities being merely subjected to environmental forces and designed solely for photosynthesis. They are dynamic and highly sensitive organisms that actively and competitively forage for limited resources, compute their circumstances and use sophisticated cost benefit analysis.
They lack of mobility, and evolved strategies, materials and devices to adapt to the changing environmental condition.
Plants are as sophisticated as animals but their potential has been masked because they operates on time scales many orders of magnitude less than that operating in animals.
Furthermore they lack of a nervous system, and therefore, the exploration of the mechanical environment and the execution of mechanical actions rely efficiently on simple reflex-like behaviour.
This new view of plants as information processing organisms is a relatively new concept and a growing community of plant scientists is now focusing on their amazing behaviours.
