Performance Statistics on Distributed Computing for Ionospheric Data Processing - Second run

02.09.2005. Finished at 13:48, 02.09.2005!
We are happy to inform you that the computations have been finished after 8 days. In the last couple of hours we celebrated two new records: the 40th ESA user connected to the system, and we reached the 70.9 GHz theoretical peak performance! (These figures became visible only after aggregating the stats of the two parts of the run.) We wish to say thank you to all of our users for their contribution. Please browse the summary statistics below for more information on the project..

01.09.2005. One week of running at 17:00, 01.09.2005.
The computing project is ongoing now for one week. We expect to finish it tomorrow.

01.09.2005. The data will be processed in two parts.
Bad news: the server stopped on Wednesday shortly after 8 PM most probably due to a network problem. The data we have evaluated was already saved to disk, so no re-computation of the existing results is needed. However, the remaining cca. 16% percent of the whole data set will be evaluated in a separate round starting at 12:00, 01.09.2005.

Upon restart, the users will see the statistic measurements starting from 0% progression, however, in the runtime summaries and charts the sum of the two "half-runs" will appear.

30.08.2005. The computing power is still increasing.
It is good to see that even after 5 days of computing, there are still new ESA users joining the project. Today, the sum of CPU frequencies of all contacted clients went up to 51.7 GHz, and moreover, during lunch time, the sum of the frequencies of the momentarily active CPUs reached the peak of 44.7 GHz for a short period!

29.08.2005. New performance record achieved.
Beside the night-time activity, the ACT Distributed Computing system reaches the highest client activity (i.e. computing power) between 12:00 and 14:00 every weekday — most possibly due to the lunch break. At 13:00, 29.08.2005, the distributed computing server registered the highest ever client activity in the history of ACT-DC: the CPU frequencies of the momentarily active clients summed up to 37.5 GHz! (The previous record, 32.0 GHz was set by the first ionospheric data processing run in June, 2005).

25.08.2005. The distributed computing server was started at 17:00.
Despite the holidays, we expect as much overall contribution as we had during the first run.

Overall statistics

After the first 188.7 hours (17:00, 31.08.2005):

  • Server running time: 11 328 mins (188 hrs 48 mins)
  • Number of contacted clients: 40
  • Theoretical peak performance (1): 70.9 GFlops
  • Processed data records: 3 499 478 out of 3 499 478
  • Overall progression: 100.0 %
  • Average client availability (2): 10.2 hrs / day (42.6 %)
  1. According to double precision floating point computations and assuming Intel P3/P4 architectures.
  2. The average idle time percentage of the user computers. It shows how much time an average client runs the screensaver.
