Optimal Light Distribution in Solar Cells

Losses in solar cells can be reduced by a covering glass with specific optical properties that leads the light into regions of high efficiency. In this short study, the potential of this method is assessed.

To improve the efficiency of solar cells is a standard issue in the development of sustainable energy sources. One source of losses in the standard design of solar cells are the shadow losses due to fingers and bus bars. These losses could be diminished if the light was directed to areas of high efficiency by means of a waved covering glass that acts as a lens. In a short study this idea is getting assessed. We expect an increase of the module efficiency of about 5%. The main advantage of the method turns out to be the possibility to put the fingers closer to each other without increasing the shadow losses.
