The series of Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) of satellites has been designed to deliver high-resolution information every 30 minutes to improve weather forecasts. The combination of MTG’s frequent, high-resolution imagery and sounding products are expected to take weather forecasting to the next level, particularly in the challenging task of ‘nowcasting’. This is about being able to detect, in real time, rapidly evolving weather such as thunderstorms. Being able to predict how weather systems will develop allows timely warnings and advice to be issued to the public.
