The emerging private space industry or “New Space” tends not to rely on government support and follows ‘game-changing’ business models that either compete with or compliment existing commercial space services.

Click here to read part two of the paper by Will Lecky that examines the rationale for public funding in space and considers its future role in an evolving space industry.

Will Lecky has been Economic Adviser to the UK Space Agency since 2015. He and UK Space Agency colleagues work with ESA to assess the impact of public funding in space based on previous programmes. Analysing the possible socio-economic impact of existing programmes underpins important decisions on the allocation of funds for new space programmes.

Mr Lecky has previously worked in the field of energy and climate change economics.
