Talking space downstream activities
The “ESA Forum about Innovation in European downstream activities” was held on the morning of 9 June, paving the way to the “Joint OECD-ESA workshop about Innovation Drivers in Downstream Space” in the afternoon and the following morning, 10 June. The event was held at ESA ECSAT in Harwell, UK.
With more than 100 participants, there was lively interaction with 25 speakers from institutions, industry and finance from US, Canada and Europe, presenting over six sessions, their experiences in the development of space downstream activities.
The objective of the forum was to promote a better understanding of the level of European institutional cooperation needed in order to develop a strong European downstream industry, the challenges of this, and about the new opportunities presented to Europe by the convergence of ICT technologies and the space economy.
In the first session, several national and European institutions presented their respective experiences of fostering innovation in the European downstream space sector and about the opportunity for institutional cooperation in this respect.
In the second session, speakers from institutions and industry presented the technological challenges and opportunities for innovation in the European downstream sector, including in particular, the emerging trends such as big data, deep learning and machine learning.
