ESA / About Us / ECSL - European Centre for Space Law

The year 2022 is one of many major planned milestones in relation to lunar exploration. Both companies and governments are launching multiple moon-bound spacecraft, including the infamous Artemis programme, NASA’s effort, in collaboration with other partners, such as ESA, to return astronauts to the moon.

Prior to manned spaceflight to the Moon, there will be multiple unmanned missions, such as Artemis 1, planned to be launched in Summer 2022, followed by many more rehearsal missions leading up to a mission intended to carry astronauts to the Moon in 2024.
The General Assembly of the UN just last year endorsed the International Moon Day, to be celebrated thus going forward on July 20, the anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon in 1969.

As Neil Armstrong is often quoted, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” – the future of human exploration of the Moon is vital for all humankind. This is precisely why the ECSL would like to offer its members – and the public – the possibility to think about the legal and programmatic aspects of Lunar Exploration.
