Objectives

United Kingdom

The ECSL’s UK National Point of Contact was established in 1990. The current Chair is Joanne Wheeler and the Secretary is Nicholas Puschman.

Members of the UK NPOC come from various sectors including insurance, banking, law as well as academics and students.

Objectives

The UK NPOC aims to promote public awareness of and interest in space law and policy for practitioners, academics and students. In addition, we promote awareness of space law in practice.

The UK NPOC appreciates the importance of education and training in space law and policy.

Events

The UK NPOC has been actively involved in organising several events in conjunction with the ECSL, Satellite Finance Network (SFN) and other space partners.

In December 2015, the UK NPOC organised a Regulatory Briefing in London. Over 75 participants from across the industry, including operators such as SES and Eutelsat, participated in discussions ranging from licensing, liability, insurance to the outcome of WRC-15.

In April 2016, the UK NPOC was pleased to co-organise the first ECSL Tech, Business and Regulatory Industry Workshop in Glasgow. This workshop is now an annual event on the ECSL calendar and is open to representatives from across the space sector with the aim of encouraging inter-disciplinary dialogue.

That same month, the UK NPOC was involved in organising the 2016 rounds of the Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition in Glasgow.

The UK NPOC promotes ECSL events at national level. It encourages students and young professionals to participate in the ECSL Summer Course on Space Law and Policy – the UK NPOC makes the pre-selection of all UK candidates. We also encourage students and British universities to get involved in student-focused events such as the Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition.

In addition to the industry events the UK NPOC organises, we also promote those hosted by the ECSL such as the Young Lawyers’ Symposium and the annual Practitioners’ Forum.
