ISS payload safety course
A five-day payload safety training course, organised by the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety, will take place at ESA?s European Space Research and Technology Centre in July. The course is designed for all those who contribute to the design and operation of payloads for the International Space Station.
Participants, including engineers, quality assurance (QA) persons, project managers and other technical discipline personnel who need to understand the process of identifying and controlling hazards, will learn how the International Space Station (ISS) payload safety review works, how it relates to the overall development and integration process, and the roles and responsibilities of the various players. Instruction will also be given in the hands-on fundamentals of payload hazard analysis, hazard documentation and key technical requirements.
The course outline includes:
- payload and system safety philosophy
- hazard identification and control
- payload safety review process ? NSTS/ISS 13830C
- preliminary hazard list and preliminary hazard analysis
- flight safety requirement documents: NSTS 1700.7b, ISS Addendum, NSTS/ISS18798
- overview of technical requirements and lectures by invited speakers
- NASA-KSC ground safety requirements
- cargo vehicles (ATV & Russian) safety process and technical requirements
- system & subsystem hazard analysis (FMECA, FHA, FTA, etc.)
- safety verifications
- writing hazard reports and safety data package
- successful presentation to the payload safety review panel
The course will be given by a professional instructor from the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS), a non-profit organisation with a long history of working with those concerned with safety at NASA and ESA.
