ESA and NASA invite interested institutional and commercial entities to provide feedback on an updated framework of international standards, the LunaNet Interoperability Specification (LNIS), to be applied to future communication and navigation services on and around the Moon.

ESA’s Moonlight Lunar Communication and Navigation Services will comply with the LunaNet Interoperability Specification (LNIS), which defines a framework of mutually agreed-upon standards to be applied by users and service providers in a cooperative network supporting communication and navigation services on and around the Moon.

The development of the LNIS is being achieved through a collaboration between NASA and ESA. As this specification is refined and new versions are produced, inputs will continue to be sought from the broad community of potential commercial service providers, lunar mission users, and other space agencies.

The newly updated LNIS (Draft Version 5) was published on 6 September 2023, including the characteristics of the signals and messages to support the lunar PNT services (AD1).

ESA and NASA invite interested institutional and commercial entities to provide feedback on the proposed draft.

The updated LNIS (Draft Version 5), and a draft applicable document (AD1) can be found at the links below:

For interested parties wishing to submit comments, questions, or make suggestions please follow the instructions on the NASA LNIS web page: LunaNet Interoperability Specification | NASA
