Animation of atmospheric methane from the Sciamachy instrument on Envisat (2002–12) and the TANSO instrument on Japan’s GOSAT (2009–12). Over time, methane levels gradually increase from shades of blue and green (representing lower levels) to shades of yellow and red (higher levels). Methane is expressed in parts per billion (ppb).
