The Orbit Your Thesis! (OYT) programme from ESA Academy offers bachelors, masters, and PhD students the opportunity to design, build, test, and operate their own experiment aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The experiment is to operate within the Ice Cubes facility in the Columbus module, where it can operate for upwards of four months in microgravity.

ESA requests that a letter of intent, privacy notice be sent to orbityourthesis [at] esa.int before the deadline. While the Letter of Intent is not required for teams to officially submit a proposal, it is highly recommended that teams submit this information to ESA Education. This will allow ESA Education to gauge interest in the programme, and potentially provide feedback before the experiment proposal is submitted. More information can be found regarding the required documents, and the process itself through the links provided here.

Status: CLOSED
Deadline: 31 October 2021, 23:59 CET

Throughout the OYT programme students develop important scientific, academic and professional skills that will help them develop their future careers. These skills include project management, risk identification & mitigation, problem solving, and working within a diverse workplace. Participating teams will experience first-hand the project management process for space missions and participate in multiple reviews of their experiment and design throughout the programme.

Students are supported and guided through the process by engineers and scientists from ESA, Space Applications Services, and members of the European Low Gravity Research Association (ELGRA). The ESA Education Office also provides financial support to cover, in part, the cost of the travel and accommodation during workshops and test campaigns.
