27 November 1995
ESA's Earth observation satellite ERS-1 has now been operating for more than four years and has been complemented by its successor, ERS-2, since April 1995. The related Pilot Application Projects have reached a fairly advanced stage. The results of about 100 of these projects will be presented at a Workshop on ERS Applications to be held in London from 6 to 8 December 1995 at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Broad Sanctuary, Westminster London SW1P 3EE.
Contributions to the Workshop also include presentations and poster sessions by Value Added companies and end users. The various sessions, divided into Land and Ocean Applications, will show how satellite data can be used in such varied fields as agricultural monitoring, tropical and rain forest evaluation, environmental hazard and emergency assessment, land- mapping exercises, coastal erosion, marine wind and wave predictions, offshore exploration, oil pollution monitoring, sea routing, sea-ice mapping, etc.
The ERS-1/ERS-2 tandem mission, which has only just started, will nevertheless be assessed in some of the papers, including interferometric applications.
On 8 December 1995, from 10:00 to 13:30 hrs, the rapporteurs will summarise the results of the individual sessions and the data application status. Plans on how to proceed will be discussed at a Round Table with representatives from industry, the EC and end users. Session rapporteurs and relevant specialists will be available for background discussions and interviews. The British National Space Centre (BNSC), which has helped organise this Workshop, will also be represented.
Media representatives wishing to attend the round table discussions (preceded by a visit to the display area) are invited to fill in the attached form and return it by fax. to ESA/ESRIN Public Relations Office: Fax. + 39 6 941 80 952, no later than 3 December 1995, or, from late afternoon on 5 December, phone the ESA office at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre: +44.171- 798 4539.
The Workshop proceedings will be issued in the first quarter of 1996, and will be available on request by contacting the ESA/ESTEC Publications Division in Noordwijk, the Netherlands (Fax. + 31 71 565 5433).
