Knowledge Management at ESA's Operations team

    Knowledge Management

Knowledge management (KM) is a new and growing area of practise that aims to help organisations increase effectiveness by identifying, capturing and sharing professional insights, experiences and expertise. A good KM system can help organisations build and maintain corporate knowledge, which might otherwise be lost through retirements, personal transfers, changes in teams and other unavoidable developments of daily work life.

The Operations team at ESA are increasingly applying KM to reap strategic and organisational value. Spacecraft operations is a knowledge-intensive activity where the effectiveness of teams at all levels is highly dependent on the skills, experience and know-how of individual team members - who often only archive their wealth of knowledge in their heads. Therefore, the goal of KM within ESA spacecraft operations is to identify, organise and share the core knowledge that exists within our teams so as to enhance efficiency, minimize operational risks and maximise benefits.
