Update from the VMC team
Due to Mars conjunction and the continuing large distance between Earth and Mars, the VMC will be in hibernation from now until early 2009.
While the camera will be dormant, we certainly won't forget about it here at ESOC and we hope that you won't either. There will be several developments to anticipate when the camera returns to service in 2009.
A colourful new year: The excellent colour processing script created by VMC contributor Gordan Ugarković will be put into use in our routine processing, so all VMC images on the website will show Mars in full colour!
The Mars Webcam blog: We're planning to move from the current VMC website to a new blog, which will enable visitors to comment on and discuss VMC and the images online. There should also be a much shorter delay between the images arriving on Earth and appearing on the web.
- Best of 2008: You may be familiar with the 'Best of 2007' selection that we put together for the site launch in August 2008 - featuring some of our favourite VMC images from operations in 2007. Now, we'd like to invite you to select your favourite VMC images from 2008 - including any from the public-submitted galleries - and we'll wrap those up into a new 'Best of 2008' gallery.
The VMC team look forward to hearing from you via vmc [@] esa.int with your 'Best of 2008' nominations. We also look forward to welcoming you back in 2009 for more from Mars. A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone on the Mars Express Flight Control Team!
