Electromagnetic Compatibility and Magneto-static Laboratory
What is it for?
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) refers to the ability of electrical equipment to operate safely in its environment, neither causing non tolerable electromagnetic disturbances to other equipment in its environment nor suffering performance degradation due to electromagnetic disturbances being present in that environment. The EMC Laboratory aims to provide an appropriate environment to perform electrical and electromagnetic measurements to ensure EMC of units, devices or equipment.
A lack of EMC can cause various problems ranging from corruption of scientific data, degradation of performance, malfunctions, loss of functions up to the loss of mission in the worst case. Magnetic cleanliness is a very important property for magnetic missions (which measure magnetic fields with high sensitivity and precision) to ensure that the local magnetic fields generated on board the spacecraft does not corrupt the scientific yield.
Measurements in the EMC lab are performed supporting projects during the development, prototyping and breadboarding phases to ensure the EMC requirements are finally met by the flight hardware. As opposed to commercial test labs staff also give advice for troubleshooting and mitigating interference problems. The EMC lab also provides the adequate environment to perform non standard, highly specialised and sophisticated electrical and electromagnetic tests and measurements. Therefore it is used as well for research activities to explore new EMC aspects and novel testing techniques.
The Magneto-Static Laboratory (MAG lab) consists of a Mobile Coil Facility (MCF) and numerical software for magnetic modelling. In the MAG lab, the magnetic properties of parts, units and devices can be characterised and/or modified to achieve the required level of magnetic cleanliness.
