Space tech innovations ready for industry exploitation
ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme’s booth ‘ESA Space Apps’ at this year’s Hanover Fair will present a number of impressive spin-offs and technology transfers, illustrating the huge untapped potential of advanced space technology for European non-space business.
“With ‘ESA Space Apps’ we wish to draw the European industry’s attention to the great number of existing innovative space technologies available,” explains Frank M. Salzgeber, Head of ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office (TTPO).
“Many of our space technologies are ready to use and represent an excellent opportunity for novel solutions to technology problems in non-space industrial fields."

‘ESA Space Apps’ will be at booth number D56 in Hall 2 at the Hanover Fair 2010 in Hanover, Germany, from 19 to 23 April. The booth is organised jointly by ESA and the German company MST Aerospace, which on behalf of ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office, leads TTPO’s Technology Transfer Network, a consortium of five European companies dedicated to transferring space technology to more earthly applications.
ESA and its broker network of companies have already implemented more than 230 technology transfers.
Ten companies will present their successful technology transfers showcasing the huge potential and opportunities of technologies, systems and expertise used in Europe’s space programmes.
Visitors will have the opportunity to discuss the specific applications and systems with the companies, as well as how they have been using space technologies in each of their specific cases.
The complete 2010 ‘ESA Space Apps’ programme will be presented to the public at a press conference on Monday 19 April at 13:00 with the participation of Frank M. Salzgeber, Dr Werner Dupont, Andreas Teske (mobile life Unternehmer GmbH), Prof. Dr Klaus Schilling, (Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg) and Prof. Dr Wolfgang Grill (Universität Leipzig).
ESA's Space Spin-off Award 2010
On Monday 19 April at 11:30 the winner of the Space Spin-off Award 2010 will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony.
ESA’s Space Spin-Off Award is given to an individual or an organisation that has carried out a space technology transfer of extraordinary success with significant economic impact and remarkable results in a non-space sector.
Space technology on display at the Technology Forum
The technology portal www.technology-forum.com with space technologies available for industry will be demonstrated by MST Aerospace, which will be available also to answer questions and give advice to industry on how to profit from space technology developments.
"The Technology Forum website is a catalyst for space companies that want to transfer their technologies to other business areas and vice versa for non-space companies who are looking for high-tech solutions for technological problems they are facing,” explains Werner Dupont, Managing Director of MST Aerospace.
“The forum features some 350 European space technologies in categories ranging from health and life sciences to materials or computer science, and some 450 requests from non-space companies for technological problem solutions.”
Innovation Triangle Initiative
This time ESA will also display its Innovation Triangle Initiative (ITI) so as encourage non space companies and research institutions to participate in ESA technology development programmes spinning into space their suitable terrestrial technologies.
“ESA is an advocate of open innovation. Space is constantly looking for the best technology from any area where it may happen and is willing to support spin-in and enter partnerships for joint action” says Alberto Tobias, Head of the Systems, Software and Technology Department of ESA.
