ESA / Applications / Technology Transfer

Several of the technologies used in the design and manufacture of modern textiles and garments come from materials and systems first developed for applications in space.

Through cooperation with space experts, the textile industry has become aware of innovative materials and methods which can be successfully employed in the creation and production of fabrics and yarns. For example, sensors and communication devices to measure body functions can be embedded in clothing to give a greater degree of comfort, convenience and security.

Materials emanating from space use can be used to make lightweight sports and sailing clothing that give greater protection against extreme cold or heat, and wind and water. Cameras used in space can be used to monitor cloth coming off the loom for flaws.
