National trainee programmes have been set up for Spain and Portugal through bilateral agreements between ESA and the respective ministries of Spain and Portugal.
These are:
- Spain: Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI) (The Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology) and the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Ministry of Science and Innovation)
- Portugal: Agência de Inovação
These programmes aim to offer recently graduated Spanish and Portuguese university students the possibility of gaining practical hands-on experience at ESA in engineering and scientific disciplines related to space applications.
ESA hosts approximately 30 students a year from each programme at one of its establishments in Europe.
These students are trainees and are not staff members. As such, all the costs and administrative activities for the traineeship, including salaries, health insurance and the issuing of employment contracts, are the responsibility of the national agencies. Trainees are entitled to 30 days leave per year after completing four months of service.

Traineeships can be offered in high-tech space activities such as space science, Earth observation, telecommunications, navigation, mission control operations and human spaceflight. Traineeships normally last for 12 months and can be extended up to a maximum of an additional 12 months.
The recruitment and selection process is initiated by the respective national agencies in coordination with ESA. Interested candidates should contact their national agency directly for more information.
