André Kuipers' diary - Part 12: Winter survival training and measuring blood pressure

Winter survival

Dutch ESA astronaut Andre Kuipers during winter survival training ahead of the DELTA Mission to the ISS. When returning to Earth, there is the possibility that the Soyuz lands in a highly inaccessible area. It could take a while for the crew to be recovered, meanwhile they have to use all the materials available to them in the Soyuz to set up camp.

Blood pressure

Dutch ESA astronaut Andre Kuipers prepares for a nights sleep whilst attached to the blood pressure measurement apparatus. Baseline data collection for the CIRCA experiment. (February 2004)

Soyuz training manual docking

Dutch ESA astronaut Andre Kuipers during training at Star City. In case the automatic docking system fails, the crew have to learn how to manually dock with ISS. In the photo Kuipers uses a laser to measure the distance to the docking port of the Space Station.

SEEDS training

Dutch ESA astronaut Andre Kuipers receives training for the SEEDS experiment that will be carried out during the DELTA Mission, due to take place in April 2004. SEEDS insan experiment whereby Kuipers will grow rocket in a specially designed box. Inside the box there are two compartments - one with light and one without. The seeds will be given water at exactly the same time. Children in the Netherlands will participate in the experiment by planting their own seeds in a SEEDS box, and comparing their results to those grown in space and help to understand the influence of gravity and light on the growth of plants (February 2004)
