Careers in Earth Observation

What is a hydrologist? How can you combine marine biology with space? And how does a lawyer make use of satellite images? 10 people telling their 10 different stories about careers in earth observation, and the paths that led them there.

This gallery of portraits is part of a communication campaign promoted by the European Space Agency to raise the interest of young people in scientific and non-scientific careers related to environmental issues. The 10 portraits are the first in a series of portraits to be published in the time to come.

Satellite images are of increasing importance in a great many domains and have dramatically changed the way we watch over the Earth and the physical phenomena, natural and man-induced, affecting it. Satellite images have also given rise to a number of new professions (Geographic Information System analyst, geospatial specialist) as well as to new areas of specialisation within more conventional type of work, such as law and medicine.

The people interviewed are young professionals from all over Europe, Canada and Japan, belonging to both private and public organisations. We would like to thank them all, as well as their companies and institutions, for their enthusiastic participation in this project.
