Flight 139 lifts off
Second successful Ariane launch in 2001

8 February 2001
Late last night, Flight 139 successfully lifted off from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The Ariane-4 launcher carried into geostationary orbit two defence satellites: Skynet 4F for the United Kingdom and Sicral for Italy.

An Ariane 44L launcher was used to carry the satellites into space. This is the most powerful of the Ariane-4 family and is equipped with four strap-on liquid boosters. Flight 139 marked the 103rd Ariane-4 launch and the 31st in the Ariane-44L configuration.

Final preparations for the launch began on 4 January with the erection of the first stage. On 5 February Flight 139 successfully passed its launch readiness review and from then on it was all systems go.

The next Ariane launch is scheduled for 2 March.
