Uppsändningen av GIOVE-A (Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element) gjordes idag med en Soyuz-Fregat-raket från Bajkonur-kosmodromen i Kazakhstan. Detta är den första uppsändningen för Galileo, Europas globala navigationssatellitsystem.
 
Alla de 30 satelliterna, som är särskilt utformade för icke-militär användning, kommer på längre sikt att ge européer och institutionella användare tillgång till den modernaste tekniken inom GPS och tidsfunktioner, med mycket hög precision, tillgänglighet, dataintegritet och garanterad signal. Galileo är ett samarbetsprojekt mellan EU-kommissionen och ESA.
