Primeiro lançamento do Galileo

O GIOVE-A (Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element - Elemento de Validação em Órbita Galileo), foi hoje lançado por um foguetão Soyuz-Fregat a partir do cosmódromo Baikonur, no Cazaquistão. Este é o primeiro lançamento do Galileo, o sistema global europeu de navegação por satélite.
A constelação completa de 30 satélites, especificamente concebidos para uma utilização civil, deverá oferecer aos cidadãos e aos utilizadores institucionais europeus serviços temporais e de posicionamento global de ponta, com um notável rigor, disponibilidade, integridade e um sinal garantido. O Galileo é uma iniciativa conjunta da Comissão Europeia e da ESA.
